MAX'S STORY
Max came from a local shelter in 2019. He had been picked up from the street with a rusty chain around his neck – he must have escaped from a life of being chained.

Max when originally rescued
When originally rescued, he had bad skin patches and was a little underweight but not too bad. However, he needed more care than the original shelter could provide, and he had become feral – terrified of people and thin as a rake with very little hair. When we got him to the DAS shelter, stayed away from us for about 2 months. We slowly gained his trust and now he is a different dog!

Max outside
He stays in the office in his bed and then at night stays outside the Caretakers’ room. He gets walked outside every day which he absolutely loves.

Max post-ear operation
He has arthritis and a bad ear and also used to get persistent ear infections until one of our vets Doctor Riv did surgery on his ear. It still needs cleaning every day.
He is such a loyal loving dog!!
Sadly, a few months ago, we found out he has terminal kidney disease. There is nothing that can be done except try to slow the progression.
He may have another year with us.

Max Recovers
All Max's boils are gone! We are monitoring every day but as of 3 weeks ago no new boils have appeared. Plus his cough seems to have gone. No coughing at all in the last couple of weeks.
This is still all very tentative but it seems like he is in a good place for now.

Max responds to antibiotics
As we reported last week, Max has been getting multiple boils over the last couple of months. We were able to have the bacteria identified as a strain similar to MRSA, which is resistant to most antibiotics.

Max during treatment
Three treatments were available - one was too strong for his failing kidneys, another was far too expensive, but Rifampicin, was cheaper and available.

Max's boils disappearing
5 days later, the boils are drying up, and he hasn't thrown up which is great as if he did we would have to stop using it.

Max has been getting multiple boils over the last couple of months. We have tried him on numerous antibiotics and also tested him for Cancer - thankfully he was negative. Ideally, we would do a culture of the boil to identify what bacteria is causing the problem but there is nowhere to do that here in Dumaguete. The boils are very painful for him.
We are limited with medications for Max as he has kidney disease so we need to be careful we don't overtax his kidneys
